Recently many religious organizations have come under investigation for the alleged mismanagement or misuse of funds. Following City Harvest Church’s purchase of a $310 million stake in Suntec Singapore, along with reports of Reverend Kong Hee’s wife Sun Ho and her extravagant lifestyle in the United States, the financial staff and stakeholders of the church are now being investigated for the misuse of church funds. Similarly, the president of Sri Siva Krishna Temple in Marsiling place is under investigation for alleged financial irregularities and serious misuse of temple funds.

In a recent article on Today the Commissioner for Charities has noted that religious organizations should not be empowered to act as financial institutions, and should not be allowed to grant loans of any sort. These issues call into the question of how religious funds should be used, and the role of the religious organizations in society.
