The Serangoon Gardens Controversy

The Serangoon Gardens controversy erupted over the erection of a foreign workers’ dormitory at a plot of land near Serangoon Gardens. Residents of the private estate were displeased with the decision, which eventually led to over a thousand of them submitting a joint petition. The project is part of a wider plan which eventually will see the building of about ten temporary workers’ dormitories to accommodate the expected surge come a few years’ time. This happening has surfaced other pertinent questions in Singaporean society, such as whether there is prevalent xenophobia and whether our government’s approach is beyond reproach.
