Recent flash floods in Singapore took many by surprise. Several areas were struck by the rising waters, which flooded basement car parks, shops and rendered roads impassable. In particular, several buildings along Orchard Road, which unlike Bukit Timah Road has never been seen as a flood-prone area, gained particular notoriety for having been badly flooded. Evidently, the floods have been put down to the drainage system having been unable to cope with the sudden, exceptionally heavy rainfall. The floods have sparked furious public debate over whether these events should be anticipated and controlled, or accepted as an unpredictable act of nature.
